Kenneth Atkinson - work hard, play hard
Kenneth Atkinson, managing Director of Butyl Seal, tells us what makes him tick.

What are your responsibilities in your current position?
As the managing director(MD) I manage the company’s day to day sales and marketing, and I consolidate the manufacturing, sales and accounts departments to ensure our customers are well taken care of in all departments.

What do you hope to achieve in your current position? What have you achieved so far?
We have enjoyed a huge growth in sales in the past seven years. What we do in a month now, is more then what we did in the first year I joined the company.
If you are not passionate about what you are doing, you are probably wasting your time.
What are the major challenges, in your opinion, that the roofing industry needs to overcome?
The supply of raw materials is linked to the strength of the rand, and it is a daily struggle to ensure the best prices
What is your favorite part of your job?
Developing new products.
Explain how you got started in your career and how did you end up where you are today?
I was the first person to work in the factory as a school kid, when my dad started the company. After many years in sales and marketing, working for some of the biggest companies in South-Africa, I came to assist the company in troubled times after the passing of my parents, I took over as MD. I studied sales and marketing at Damelin and have pursued my career for more then 20 years.
How do you see the future? What do you still want to achieve?
I believe your future is bright if you are prepared to work hard, play hard and never neglect your family. I would like to build my business into a multi-faceted empire, allowing me to take on projects that i believe in.
What attracted you to this industry?
The roofing industry needs products that actually work and do not fail after a couple of years. We have our products in some roofs that have been standing for over 35 years. I am passionate about this industry and the many opportunities it has for someone who isn’t scared to take a few risks.
Which big projects have you been apart of?
Our tape was used extensively by Bombela on the Gautrain project to seal various parts of the tunnel.
Do you enjoy what you do and why?
If you find something you absolutely love to do, you will never work a day in your life
What is our work philosophy?
